Scandinavian Winter Traditions

The winter season brings shorter days and cooler temperatures, which encourages cozy candle-lit evenings at home, pots of soup and warm winter sweaters. This time of hunkering down and spending more time indoors is precisely why it is considered the hygge high season! Follow the example of the Scandinavians, and embrace the season with these Nordic winter traditions - fika with friends, revel in a toasty sauna session, light a Christmas Countdown candle, and enjoy the outdoors despite the cold temps.

Fika

The holiday season is a time for gathering with friends and family. Fika is a Swedish custom where you take a break to gather with friends and family to enjoy a coffee, eat cakes and catch-up. Like hygge, this practice is making its way around the world, and many people are adopting this Swedish custom whether it be in the workplace or in their personal lives. Fika emphasizes the importance of taking time to enjoy the little moments with your loved ones, while enjoying a drink and/or treat of your choice. We invite you to cozy up in the warmth of the Hygge Life Café to fika with your friends and family. Our space was intentionally designed to encourage conversation and meaningful moments and our tea cake is delicious!

Sauna

Saunas have been a Scandinavian tradition for generations. Scandinavian sauna culture revolves around the idea that heated spaces allow us to relax and sweat away our stress and worries, in addition to providing several health benefits. It’s typical (and recommended) to steam, cool, and repeat. Stay in the sauna for as long as you feel comfortable, cool off in the winter breeze or a cold plunge, and repeat.

Beginning in the new year, you can enjoy a sauna at Hygge Life every Saturday! Your 1-hour session includes a wood-fired sauna, cold plunge, and your drink of choice from the café for up to 6 people. Gather your friends for a healthy and hygge start to the new year!

Sauna Tip: Make sure you hydrate before your sauna session!

Christmas Candle

A Danish holiday tradition that is fun for the entire family - countdown to Christmas day by burning this unscented pillar candle once each day in December until you wake up on Christmas morning. The Christmas Candle is a perfect opportunity to start a new tradition with your family or for a unique gift. We love featuring these on a dining table where you enjoy family dinners or on a mantle atop a warm fireplace.

Enjoy the Outdoors

Take some time to enjoy nature despite the cooler temps and wintry weather. Getting outside and breathing fresh air during the winter is crucial to maintaining a happy, healthy (and hygge) lifestyle. Our showroom and café is located in the heart of the Vail Valley between Vail and Beaver Creek ski resorts, so we have no shortage of winter activities here. No matter where you are, put your puffy coat on and get outside for a walk, skate or snowshoe.

Our showroom and café are open for the holiday season. Make sure to stop by Tuesday - Saturday, 10-5pm and Mondays in December 10-5pm. Keep reading for an overview of our upcoming winter events!
