Hygge Guide to a Holiday-Ready Home

The holidays are just around the corner. We've been holiday planning for the shop over the past few months, so in our world it feels like they are already here. But now it's time to bring holiday hygge into our home and get ready for all the cozy festivities ahead. I put together a little hygge guide for getting your home ready for the holidays. Remember while reading, there are no obligations or expectations and no stress is allowed, only joyful anticipation.

There are countless opportunities for hosting family and friends over the holiday season, which is what makes this time of year so special and memorable. We try to make our guests feel as comfortable as possible and create an atmosphere that fosters a 'hyggelig' gathering. This doesn't mean making our home look perfect but making our home feel warm, comfortable and inviting.

One way to make this cozy atmosphere, is to put a basket of slippers in various sizes by the door so your guests can slip off their shoes and enjoy a soft pair of slippers. Have your guests ease into a pair of slippers whether you are having friends over for dinner or a morning latte date with your girlfriend.

We also put on our personal slippers when we enter the door, even when not expecting guests. This transition from the outside world into your home can be such an exciting moment in the day and we like to make it even more satisfying by slipping into our cozy slippers as soon as we walk in the door.

Another way to make your home feel extra cozy over the holiday season is by draping blankets, sheepskins and soft textures all over your home. Lay sheepskins beside your bed for a comforting step before getting in or out of bed. Drape an extra blanket on the foot of your bed for an extra layer of warmth and a cozy, wintry look. In the living room, lay a sheepskin over the couch and have a basket of blankets of varying weights accessible. If you have wooden or metal chairs around your dining table, make them more comfortable for you and your guests by using sheepskin seat pads or draping sheepskins off the back of the chairs.

Clean out your chimney and get ready to light some fires! During the holidays, there is a festive feeling in the air. We light even more candles than usual and make sure that our fireplace is glowing as much as possible. Fully embrace hygge in your home this holiday season by making lots of fires and lighting plenty of candles. If you don't have a fireplace, then break out the candles. Take a moment to light a festive candle every day and appreciate the feelings of holiday anticipation.

The holidays only come around once a year, so we are believers in fully embracing the festive spirit for as long as possible. As soon as our neighborhood nursery has Christmas trees in stock, we make a moment of picking out our a big, fragrant, real tree. We string it with twinkly lights and our favorite ornaments and light it as soon as the sun goes down each evening. We make sure to do this each year simply because we love it and every time we see our tree, it triggers us to relax, slow down and just enjoy. Do you have holiday traditions that give you joy? Maybe it's baking Christmas cookies with your children, decorating the tree with your partner while drinking festive cocktails, or lighting a Christmas countdown candle at the dinner table each evening in December. Make sure to continue doing these things because it's these little moments that make the holidays such a special time of the year.

The last and most important tip I have for creating a hygge holiday home is to not seek perfection or try to get your home decorated and ready for the holidays all in one go. Accept the time it will take and appreciate all of the little moments that help you get there, like picking out a Christmas tree, making a fire, decorating your home or baking a pie. In order to fully enjoy these holiday moments, understand that all of these tasks take time. Enjoy the process and all the in between moments so you can fully embrace and sincerely enjoy all the holiday festivities to come. Happy Holiday prepping!
